The former VP of Blakus Inc., Emerwyn is an expert in security systems. She performed 'intrusion tests' for Blakus clients, breaking into their security systems, and then showing them how she did it. She was quite good, though she'd always felt her skills could be put to better use. On one job, she encountered the infamous Lizbeth Locke, and the two hit it off very well. Emerwyn started taking jobs with Liz on the side and the two quickly fell into a relationship. Liz proposed that Emerwyn work with her full time, but she was still devoted to the company. At the same time, Blakus started have financial difficulties, and was bought from the brink of bankruptcy by a personal rival. He blackmailed her into leaving the security business entirely. She agreed, and now works as Liz's accountant, and manager of the estate.
Emerwyn has a kind, soft-hearted nature that belies her ability to be hard and resolute when required. Though their relationship ended, she and Liz remained close friends, with Emerwyn handling most of the financial details of purchasing the house. She also personally oversaw the renovations, and the rumor is that she designed the house's security systems herself, with the aid of Miranda. Considering the two's previous working relationship, that rumor alone is enough to deter any former rival of the housemates from a surprise visit.
While Emerwyn doesn't have enhanced physical abilities, her physical skills are still far beyond average. Because she's often surrounded by such overpowered people like Liz, it's sometimes easy for her to forget that she's more than a match for nearly any random person she meets on the street.
Emerwyn holds ranks in three major martial arts:
While she is quite proud of her ranking, she feels that mastery is something she will never be able to be devoted enough to achieve. She is always striving to be better, but (especially in Krav Maga) she has hit a bit of a wall and is unable to push past it.
Emerwyn won the silver medal for the US Fencing team in the 2008 Bejing Olympics. Since then, she has maintained her A ranking ever four years; she is currently A19 (the last time she earned her A ranking was in 2019).
Emerwyn is also proficient with several other sword styles, but she prefers rapiers to all other swords. She frequently teaches at (and participates in) SCA Rapier Combat events.
Emerwyn has worked her way up through a company until she became the President of a billion dollar company. She was a good manager, by all accounts, and fit the role excellently. She has a keen eye for business opportunities and plenty of experience with financial ventures.
As a means to persue Liz, Emerwyn studdied security relentlessly. She became extremely proficient at designing security systems, though her expertise was in penitration. She has a devious mind for exploting vulnerabilities and her coding skills mixed with her interpersonal skills has made her one of the world's leading experts in security penitration testing.
Her skills are so well known, at Defcon in 2018 she earned the nickname 'The Red Mage of Death' (alluding to her being a one man 'red team'). she enjoyed the moniker so much that her online handle is now redmage18
, and it's become infamous in the right circles. To help cut down on impersonations, she literally took out an ad in Times Magazine to publish her public key, as well as making sure it's linked off the mian Defcon site, so people can trivially find it. This way, should anyone use the redmage18
handle, they can be interrogated; they will be asked to encrypt a known phrase plus the current unix timestamp, and if the encrypted text can be decrypted by the known public key, they know this user is legit.
(Emerwyn mainly does this because she feels people fail to grasp how simple something like identity verification can be, and also wants to raise awareness of simple public-key cryptographic uses.)
Emerwyn has her Masters in Business Administration, as well as a Master's in Psychology. She had been validictorian for every school she's attended.
She is a registered notary, and has completed the first two of five actuary exams (before she realized they were more scam than meaningful.)
She is also a very proficient book keeper and interned as a paralegal as a means to understand law beter.
